Ryan Giggs’s Liverpool Jabs Resurface After Manchester United’s Poor Start
The 3-0 thrashing of Manchester United by Tottenham has brought back some old comments from Ryan Giggs, the Welshman who played for the Red Devils for over two decades. Giggs, who has since become the manager of the Welsh national team, made some bold statements about Liverpool back in 2011.
Speaking to the Mirror, Giggs said, "Liverpool are a big club, but they’ve obviously had massive problems off the pitch. They’ve had a new manager this season and new owners, and they haven’t got off to the start they’d wished." He also added, "But they have got quality players in their team, and when you’ve got that, you’ve always got a chance. Losing is like winning, in that it can become a habit."
It’s funny to look back at those comments now, given how far Liverpool have come since then. Under the management of Jürgen Klopp, they’ve won the Champions League, the Premier League, and several cup competitions. They’re currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table, while United are languishing in 13th place.
Since Giggs’s comments, United have failed to win either the Premier League or the Champions League, with just a handful of domestic cup competitions to their name. They’ve had some success, including last year’s FA Cup and their 2017 Europa League victory, but it’s clear that they’re struggling to keep up with the likes of Liverpool and other top teams.
Giggs’s words may have been meant to be a jab at Liverpool’s struggles at the time, but it’s clear that they underestimated the team’s potential. Liverpool’s ability to adapt and improve under Klopp has been remarkable, and they’re now one of the top teams in the world.
As United fans, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disappointment and frustration with the team’s performance this season. But it’s also a reminder that the Premier League is a highly competitive league, and teams need to be at their best to succeed.
