Manchester United’s Midfield Move Hijacked by Premier League Rival – What’s Next?
Erik ten Hag’s search for a new holding midfielder has hit a snag, as a Premier League rival has stolen a march on Manchester United. The Red Devils had been keen on signing Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte, but their unwillingness to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s asking price has left them with a gaping hole in their midfield.
According to reports, United had identified an alternative target in former loanee Sofyan Amrabat, as well as Burnley star Sander Berge. However, a £30million offer for Berge was rejected by the Championship side, and now it seems the Norwegian is set to join Fulham instead.
As reported by The Athletic, Berge is traveling to London on Monday evening and will undergo a medical on Tuesday, having already agreed personal terms. The deal will bring an end to Fulham’s interest in Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, who United were open to selling this summer.
So, what’s next for United? They still need to find a new holding midfielder to support their attack, and time is running out. The transfer window may be slowly closing, but there are still plenty of options available.
United could turn their attention to other targets, such as Wolves’ Leander Dendoncker or Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Alternatively, they could look to promote from within, giving opportunities to younger players like James Garner or Hannibal Mejbri.
Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain – United’s midfield needs an injection of quality to compete with the best in the Premier League. Will Erik ten Hag be able to find the solution to this problem, or will United be left scrambling to make up for lost time?
