Chelsea’s Squad Chaos: Jamie Carragher Unloads on the Blues
The Premier League is back, and so are the controversies. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has sparked a heated debate about Chelsea’s squad management, labeling the situation as "chaotic" and suggesting that players are signing for the Blues for all the wrong reasons.
During a recent appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher voiced his concerns about Chelsea’s squad dynamics. With 43 players on the books, it’s no wonder that the 43-year-old is questioning the wisdom of bringing in more talent.
"Why would a player sign for Chelsea?" Carragher asked. "The only reason is because their agent is offering them a seven-year deal on big money. But I’d say to a player, ‘Back yourself as a player. Sign a four-year deal at a proper club and back yourself to do well.’"
Carragher believes that Chelsea’s squad is plagued by a lack of competition, with too many players vying for limited spots. He cited his own experiences at Liverpool, where players knew their roles and were able to flourish.
"Great football teams need competition, but every team I played in, there were seven or eight players who knew they were playing every week," he explained. "And then you’ve got six or seven players who are fighting for three positions, and then another six or seven who know they’re squad players. That is a healthy squad."
But what about the likes of Joao Felix, who is set to join the Blues on a permanent deal? Carragher is skeptical, asking where the Portuguese star will play amidst Chelsea’s crowded midfield.
"You know what I want to ask you, where is Joao Felix going to get changed in the training ground? I’m deadly serious," he joked. "If you’ve got 40 players, how are you all in one dressing room, and how are you putting a training session on? How are you creating that cohesion?"
Chelsea’s squad issues are hardly a new phenomenon. Academy graduates Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher have been made surplus to requirements, while Carney Chukwuemeka has been told to find another club. Even Raheem Sterling, a high-profile signing just last season, was left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the defeat to Manchester City.
So, what’s the solution? Carragher believes that Chelsea need to adopt a more measured approach to squad building, prioritizing quality over quantity.
"Chelsea need to stop buying players and players need to stop signing for Chelsea," he concluded. "Let’s get back to building a team, not a squad."
