Paul Scholes Raises Major Concern Over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Future at Liverpool
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has sparked concern among fans and experts alike after being substituted again in the Reds’ latest Premier League win. Legendary midfielder Paul Scholes is worried that manager Arne Slot may not be on the same page as Alexander-Arnold, particularly after observing Slot’s reaction on the bench.
Speaking on Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, Scholes said, "Watching that Sunday game, every time he gave the ball away he [Slot] was shaking his head. I was down there. He kept looking away and turning around to his bench. He was trying these long balls, which obviously he can do brilliantly. I thought, ‘I’m not sure if he likes him’."
This concern is not unwarranted, as Slot’s tactics have been significantly different from those of Jurgen Klopp, who nurtured Alexander-Arnold’s growth at the club. The Dutch manager prefers shorter, more possession-based football, which may not play to Alexander-Arnold’s strengths.
"Slot wants to play short, simple passes, whereas Trent is used to going long and taking risks. I think he will be treated differently, and Slot’s tactics may not suit him," said Scholes.
Alexander-Arnold’s contract expires at the end of the season, leaving his future at Liverpool uncertain. Fellow academy graduate Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk are in the same situation, but Scholes believes the reactions to their potential departures will be different.
"At Liverpool, you’re an academy product, and when you leave, it’s like a betrayal. When Trent leaves, it won’t be the same reaction as when Salah or Virgil leave. The fans will be more understanding with Trent," he said.
