Roy Keane Blasts Gary Neville Over Trent Alexander-Arnold Praise
In a lively debate on the latest episode of Stick to Football, brought to you by Sky Bet, Roy Keane couldn’t resist taking a cheeky dig at his former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville over his praise for Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold, 25, put in an impressive individual performance in England’s 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday, displaying his excellent range of passing throughout the game before helping to set up the second goal.
Neville, who interviewed Alexander-Arnold for several hours last season, waxed lyrical about the Liverpool star’s knowledge of the game, saying: "I was mesmerised by the fact that… you look at someone and you think he’s a brilliant player. I’ve criticised him defensively and you’ve said he shouldn’t play in midfield. I could not believe how much he knew about football historically in the last 20 to 25 years."
But Keane wasn’t having it, joking that Neville was always stunned, saying: "You always are! Any Scouser that can speak properly, Gary is like – ‘I was stunned’."
Neville attempted to be serious, praising Alexander-Arnold’s understanding of the game, saying: "I couldn’t believe it. How many games he’d watched, how into it he was. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. I couldn’t believe it."
Despite Keane’s jibes, Alexander-Arnold’s performance was a highlight of the game, and his impressive range of passing and vision on the pitch has earned him rave reviews from pundits and fans alike.
