Neal Maupay Calls Out Everton Fans Who Abused Their Own Players at Euston Train Station
Another disappointing day in the life of Everton fans. The Toffees’ 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur was already bad enough, but things took a ugly turn when a group of supporters began directing their anger towards their own players at London Euston train station.
While Jordan Pickford and Mason Holgate were kind enough to acknowledge the heckling fans, it was French forward Neal Maupay who really spoke out against the unacceptable behavior. When a fan shouted at him, Maupay had had enough.
"It’s normalized to get abuse like this? You’re hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best," he tweeted, rightly slamming the fans for their cruel words.
The incident has sparked outrage across the football community, with many questioning how Everton fans can so easily forget that their team’s struggles are not the players’ fault, but rather the fault of a deeper-lying problem within the club.
It’s worth noting that Maupay has spoken out about abuse before. In a disturbing expose on BBC Radio 4’s Why Do You Hate Me podcast, the 28-year-old opened up about the vile abuse he received online after scoring the winner for Brighton against Arsenal in 2020. He described receiving death threats, including one that warned his "loved ones would go through suffering."
This sort of behavior is unacceptable and needs to stop. As a community, we need to stand together against the sort of vile abuse that can have such serious consequences.
So, what can we do to help? For starters, let’s educate ourselves on the issue and do our part to promote a more positive, supportive atmosphere around the beautiful game.
And, of course, we must also hold those who engage in such behavior accountable. No one deserves to be subject to abuse, regardless of their profession.
