Miami beats Atlanta in Messi’s MLS playoff debut

Inter Miami Kick Off MLS Cup Playoffs with Thrilling Win Over Atlanta United

October 27, 2024

In a match that had it all, Inter Miami FC kicked off their MLS Cup playoffs campaign with a thrilling 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Friday night. Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, known for his mesmerizing skills on the pitch, played a pivotal role in the victory, providing the assist for the decisive goal.

The match got off to a scintillating start, with Luis Suarez netting the opening goal just minutes into the game. However, Atlanta United leveled the scores in the 39th minute through Saba Lobjanidze, ensuring that the first half ended with the teams locked at 1-1.

The second half saw Messi’s side step up their game, with the global superstar determined to make an impact. His powerful left foot nearly made it 2-0 after six minutes, only to be denied by the impressive Brad Guzan. Messi’s subsequent attempts, including a thunderbolt in the 26th minute and a precision shot in the 29th, were all thwarted by the Atlanta goalkeeper.

Georgia native and Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino had no complaints, acknowledging that his side faced a tough task. "It’s going to be difficult for us," he said. "It’s going to be difficult as this rival has been throughout the season."

Red-hot Suarez scored the winner in the 60th minute, with Jordi Alba turning in Messi’s sublime pass to net the go-ahead goal. Despite Guzan’s heroics, Inter Miami’s high-intensity pressing ultimately paid off, as they secured their first-ever home playoff win.

The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd at DRV PNK Stadium, with Messi’s presence drawing global attention. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner even had a camera isolated on him throughout the game, streaming his views on TikTok.

"That’s what we felt. Anything can happen in a match," Messi said in an interview, set to be released on MLS’ Season Pass platform.

Atlanta United will look to bounce back in Game 2, scheduled for November 2 in Atlanta, the last road game of the season for Inter Miami. A win or draw in the third and final match, if necessary, would secure their spot in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
