Messi’s Masterclass Deserves a Goal, But Alba Delivers in Opener against Atlanta United
Lionel Messi’s mesmerizing skills on the pitch were on full display, but even he knew it was Jordi Alba who’d seal the deal. The Argentina superstar had chances aplenty, only to be foiled by Brad Guzan’s incredible reflexes. But in the 60th minute, Alba turned a pinpoint pass from Messi into the go-ahead goal, and Luis Suarez added a second as Inter Miami edged Atlanta United 2-1 in the MLS Cup playoffs.
As the No. 1 overall seed and Supporters’ Shield winners, Inter Miami’s victory wasn’t unexpected, but it was a testament to their depth and quality that they saw off a tough Atlanta United side. For Messi, it was his MLS playoff debut, and while he pushed his luck with three high-quality chances in the first half, he finally got his reward.
A minute into the game, Suarez fired Inter Miami into the lead, only for Saba Lobjanidze to level with a clinical finish. Atlanta United’s eight saves from Guzan were crucial in keeping them in the match, but in the end, it was Alba’s goal that proved the difference.
"For 60 minutes, the game was even," said Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino. "But we had to keep pushing. And it paid off." For Atlanta, Brad Guzan’s heroics will be a massive boost, but the reality is that Inter Miami’s superior quality told in the end.
The victory was Inter Miami’s first-ever home playoff game, and it was a fitting occasion for Messi’s MLS playoff debut. The cameras were on him throughout the match, and the world was watching. But Alba’s goal will be the one that gets all the attention. "It’s going to be difficult for us," admitted Martino. "But we’ll keep working and try to find a way to get through."
Inter Miami’s next match is set for November 2nd in Atlanta, with the series hanging in the balance. Game 3, if necessary, will be played on November 9th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
