Lionel Messi scores twice vs. Philadelphia Union in return to Inter Miami lineup

Messi Magic Returns as Inter Miami Cruise Past Philadelphia Union

Lionel Messi is back and better than ever! The Argentine superstar scored twice in four minutes as Inter Miami romped to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Union in his first game for the club in over three months.

Messi’s return to the pitch was a moment to remember. He picked up where he left off, scoring his 13th MLS goal of the season in the 26th minute before adding a second just four minutes later. The Union had taken an early lead, but Messi’s clinical finishing secured the win for Inter Miami.

The win sees Inter Miami maintain their MLS-best record, moving to 19-4-5. They are now 10 points clear of second-placed Los Angeles Galaxy and FC Cincinnati in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.

But Messi’s return wasn’t just about the goals. His presence on the pitch seemed to lift the entire team, and his vision and passing range were on full display as he set up Luis Suárez for Inter Miami’s third goal in the 98th minute.

Messi’s return was a long time coming, with the 34-year-old having been out injured since suffering damage to an ankle ligament during the Copa América final in July. He was also left off Argentina’s roster for their World Cup qualifiers last week, but it was clear he was itching to get back on the pitch.

And what a welcome back it was! Messi’s two goals take his tally to 14 for the season, just five behind league leader Christian Benteke of D.C. United. He has 15 assists to his name, too, showcasing his incredible ability to create chances for his teammates.

For Inter Miami, Messi’s return is a major boost ahead of the MLS playoffs, which begin on October 23. The team is currently on a 10-3-1 run in all competitions, and with Messi back in the fold, they’ll be looking to go all the way.

Long Road Back for Messi

Messi’s return to the pitch was a long time coming, but it was clear he had been working hard to get back to full fitness. His ankle injury was a setback, but he has clearly been training hard and is now back to his best.

The question on everyone’s mind is whether Messi will be able to maintain this level of form throughout the rest of the season. The answer, of course, is only time will tell. But one thing is for sure – with Messi on the pitch, Inter Miami are a force to be reckoned with.
