Gundogan Reveals the Manager Who Had the Biggest Influence on Him
Ilkay Gundogan has made a shocking revelation about the manager who had the biggest influence on his career. The German midfielder, who has played under both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, has named the former Barcelona boss as the one who has had the most significant impact on his playing style and approach to the game.
Gundogan joined Manchester City in 2016 and has since become a key player for the club, helping them win numerous titles including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. However, his time at City was interrupted by a brief stint at Barcelona, where he played under Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernandez.
In a recent interview, Gundogan compared his experiences playing under Guardiola and Klopp, revealing that the former has had a much greater influence on his career. "It’s a bit different to the Liverpool rivalry," Gundogan said. "Because of the way the teams play. Arsenal are much more similar to how we play than Klopp’s Liverpool ever were."
Gundogan also praised Guardiola’s influence on his playing style, saying: "Mikel knows this club, the players, and the manager very well. He worked with Pep and there is a huge influence with Pep on Mikel."
Despite playing under Klopp for several years at Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan’s comments suggest that Guardiola’s influence has been more profound. This is not surprising, given the success that Guardiola has achieved with City and Barcelona, and the emphasis he places on possession-based football.
Gundogan’s comments also highlight the importance of Guardiola’s influence on the next generation of coaches. The likes of Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca, who have both worked under Guardiola, are already making a name for themselves in the Premier League.
