Liverpool fans have been left fuming after their team’s season opener at Ipswich Town, with the decision not to send off Wes Burns for a series of incidents sparking a fiery debate.
The Reds traveled to Portman Road to face the newly-promoted side, but struggled to create chances in the first half. However, their frustration was compounded by the referee’s lack of action against Ipswich’s Burns, who was booked for a foul but then handled the ball twice and slapped it out of Diogo Jota’s path.
The 29-year-old’s actions looked deliberate and worthy of a second yellow card, leading to widespread outrage among the Liverpool faithful. "Game changing situation, where VAR should get involved imo. Clear and obvious 2nd yellow," wrote one fan. "Imagine if this was a Liverpool player, that’s a second yellow without VAR," added another.
The lack of intervention from VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has also drawn criticism, with many fans questioning the system’s effectiveness. "This is what I mean, how on earth is VAR not allowed to intervene on that? It’s a blatant handball, meaning a 2nd yellow card," said one fan.
To make matters worse for Liverpool, Burns was forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury at the start of the second half, replaced by new signing Ben Johnson. However, the Reds managed to take the lead on the hour mark, with Mo Salah setting up Jota for a simple finish, before doubling their advantage with a record ninth goal on the Premier League opening weekend.
The controversy has sparked a heated debate among fans, with some calling for an explanation from the Premier League and VAR officials. "Yes, this should have been a second yellow for Wes Burns. Care to give an explanation @PLMatchCentre?" asked one fan.
