Chelsea Legend Mikel John Obi Goes Off on Todd Boehly’s Handling of the Club
Chelsea great Mikel John Obi has hit out at Todd Boehly’s leadership of the club, expressing his disappointment at the way things have been run at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking to beIN SPORTS, Obi said: "We have to start well, Chelsea football club. We can’t afford to have another bad season because the last three seasons have been really, really bad. We don’t want to be a mid-table club. Chelsea football club is a club that always competes in winning the Premier League and being in the Champions League."
He added: "That’s where we’ve always been, and we want to get back to that. And with the way the club is run right now, with all of these players and the structure of the club, it’s an absolute mess."
Obi, who played for Chelsea between 2006 and 2017, claimed that he spoke to a senior director at the club about Boehly’s plan for the next decade, but was unimpressed by what he heard.
"I spoke to the director when I went back to London and he was telling me about the whole project of five to ten years, but there is no five or ten years project, we want to win now. Enzo Maresca has his hands full with this football club."
Chelsea has failed to qualify for the Champions League for two successive seasons, and has been criticized for its squad management. The club currently has a squad of 43 players, which has led to concerns about the club’s long-term sustainability.
Boehly has been heavily criticized for his handling of the club, and many fans are worried about the direction the club is heading. Obi’s comments will likely spark further debate and controversy around Boehly’s leadership.
Chelsea kicks off its 2024/25 season with a match against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
