Wesley Fofana Speaks Out on Enzo Fernandez: "He’s Not Racist, He Just Didn’t Understand"
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has finally broken his silence on the controversy surrounding teammate Enzo Fernandez, who sparked outrage with a video of himself and his Argentina teammates singing a derogatory song about the French national team.
Fofana, who initially called out Fernandez on social media, has now spoken to the media about the incident, revealing that the two players have since had a heart-to-heart conversation.
"I explained why I didn’t like the video," Fofana said. "He explained. He said sorry because he didn’t want to hurt French fans or anyone. He didn’t understand when singing it."
Fofana, who has since deleted his initial post, emphasized that he trusts Fernandez and believes the incident has been a valuable learning experience for the 23-year-old.
"But now it’s done, it’s good. I’m happy with this situation because he understands me, I understand him, he said sorry, I trust him, and that is the most important thing," Fofana said.
Fofana also acknowledged that Fernandez is a big player in Argentina and hopes that the incident has educated him about the importance of cultural sensitivity.
"I hope this has educated him a bit, because for sure, it is a different culture," Fofana said.
Chelsea resume their pre-season tomorrow with a match against Club America, having drawn with Wrexham and lost to Celtic.
