Messi, Miami seal Concacaf Champions Cup place

Inter Miami Secures Spot in 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup

Hey 90min fam! Inter Miami has officially punched their ticket to the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, and we’re stoked to share the details with you!

As things stand, the Herons are sitting pretty atop the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings with a whopping 64 points from 30 games. With just four matches left to play, they need only eight points to clinch the trophy – and could do it as early as this weekend.

Miami’s got their sights set on Charlotte FC on Saturday and the Columbus Crew on October 2. If they can pick up maximum points from those games, the Shield will be theirs for the taking!

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, folks. Inter Miami’s Concacaf journey didn’t exactly get off to a smooth start this year. They made their continental debut in 2024, only to be ousted 5-2 on aggregate by Liga MX giants CF Monterrey. Things got a little heated off the pitch, too – a heated argument between players and staff in the hallway of Chase Stadium led to an investigation and sanctions against the MLS team.

And in case you missed it, the drama involved none other than the one and only Lionel Messi. According to sources, Messi had a run-in with the Miami team in the visitors’ locker room after their 2-1 loss to Monterrey in April. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to happen in a high-pressure tournament, if you know what we mean!

So, who else has qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup? Well, it’s a star-studded lineup, if we do say so ourselves! Joining Inter Miami are the Columbus Crew (Leagues Cup winners), LAFC (Leagues Cup runners-up), Sporting Kansas City (U.S. Open Cup finalists), Vancouver Whitecaps (Canadian Championship winners), and the Colorado Rapids (Leagues Cup third place).

And then there are the four remaining slots yet to be determined. We’ll keep an eye on things, but for now, the 2024 MLS Cup winner, Supporters’ Shield winner, next-best finisher in the Supporters’ Shield standings, and non-Supporters’ Shield winning conference top seed are all still in the mix.

From Mexico, Liga MX heavyweights like Club America, Chivas de Guadalajara, CF Monterrey, Tigres UANL, Cruz Azul, and Pumas UNAM have already secured their spots in the tournament.
