According to Lammers, "There were spaces in the counter-attack and if we played it a little bit better, then we could have won." Despite being held to a draw, the Twente forward remained optimistic about his side’s performance. "We are a team that want to play with confidence, we want to play well. We knew Manchester is a strong team so sometimes we had to drop back and wait for the counter-attack, and that’s what we did. That’s what we did, we waited for a mistake, and that’s how we scored the goal as well."
Manchester United fans, however, did not take kindly to Lammers’ boasts. Reacting on social media, one fan quipped: "I can’t believe he’s standing there, saying these things, in Old Trafford. That wild ‘we could have won’ lol." Another tweet read: "United’s press is so disjointed that any team can easily find spaces to exploit. The distance between the midfield and defense line is so wide."
Eriksen had put Manchester United ahead in the first half before Lammers equalized in the 68th minute. This marked the fifth consecutive Europa League match where United has either drawn or lost.
