Cristiano Ronaldo gets roasted by Antonio Cassano – but is it over the top?
Recently, former Italy star Antonio Cassano made some outlandish claims about the great Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting that the Portuguese superstar isn’t actually very good at football, except for scoring goals. Yes, you read that right – Cassano think’s Ronaldo is a bit of a one-trick pony!
Now, at 39, Ronaldo may not be the same dominating force he was in his prime, but to label him as someone who’s only good at scoring and not much else is borderline insulting. The man is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner and has consistently terrorized opponents throughout his career.
True, Ronaldo may not possess the same level of wizardry on the ball or vision as some of the other great forwards of our time, but to call him a one-dimensional forward is unfair. He has evolved as a player and adapted to the changing tactical landscape, often finding novel ways to score goals at an incredible rate.
Look, Cassano is allowed his opinion, and on paper, the six alternatives he mentioned – Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Gonzalo Higuain – are no doubt exceptional players. And yet, it’s odd to see Cassano dismissing Ronaldo’s abilities so abruptly. Is it because those players are his personal acquaintances or did he witness their greatness firsthand?
But what’s most striking here is the lack of specificity in Cassano’s takedown. Where are these alleged shortcomings? What instances of Ronaldo’s supposed failings can we point to? It’s all conjecture and hearsay! And what’s the impact on the beautiful game now that we’re reduced to trash talk and name-calling?
