The Italian media were quick to react to Scott McTominay’s full Napoli debut against Juventus

McTominay Makes a Splash in Napoli Debut

Scott McTominay made his full debut for Napoli in a thrilling 0-0 draw against Juventus, and the Italian media has been raving about the Scotsman’s performance. The midfielder, who left Manchester United after 22 years, was a key player in Antonio Conte’s new 4-2-3-1 system, putting in a typically hard-working display.

The Italian media was quick to praise McTominay, with James Horncastle, The Athletic’s Italian football expert, tweeting: "OK his number isn’t Diego’s No.10 but McTominay’s first start for Napoli is away to Juventus as their No.10 in a new 4-2-3-1 shape for Conte. My mind is blown." Corriere dello Sport described McTominay as a "dominant all-rounder with physique, technique, and personality".

Calcio Mercato went even further, calling McTominay Napoli’s "next idol" and comparing him to the likes of Diego Maradona and Edinson Cavani. As a Scot and Manchester United fan, you’ll hear no complaints from me about those comparisons!

Gazetta was similarly full of praise, saying Napoli would "hardly be able to do without the former United player". However, it’s worth noting that McTominay’s 10-minute cameo against Cagliari didn’t receive the same reaction, with some critics calling him stiff and not up to standard.

But Conte was quick to defend McTominay, alongside his new signings, saying: "The more time passes, the more they fit into our idea, with David [Neres] we worked during the break, ten days with Billy [Gilmour] and Scott, it was positive." He added: "They are understanding the idea of football we want to play. They adapt to the type of work also from a physical, metabolic, strength point of view, what the coach asks."

McTominay’s impressive debut has set the bar high for his future performances in Naples. With Napoli looking to challenge for the Serie A title, the Scotsman will be expected to play a key role in their campaign.
