Anthony Martial Finds New Home: Former Man Utd Star Joins Greek Giants AEK Athens
In a shocking move, former Manchester United star Anthony Martial has finally found a new home, putting an end to his prolonged search for a new club. The 28-year-old Frenchman has signed a three-year deal with Greek giants AEK Athens, reportedly worth £2.5 million per season.
Martial’s departure from Old Trafford was expected, given his inconsistent form and multiple injury issues during his six-year stay at the club. The forward, who joined United in 2015 from AS Monaco for a reported £36 million, scored 90 goals in 317 appearances for the Red Devils. However, his last season at the club was underwhelming, managing only two goals in 19 appearances.
The Greek giants will be hoping Martial can recapture his best form and lead the team to glory. AEK Athens will be the fourth European club Martial has played for, following spells with Lyon and Sevilla on loan.
But what’s behind Martial’s struggles? According to France legend Emmanuel Petit, speaking to talkSPORT, the forward’s problems stem from a lack of desire to continue his career. Petit believes Martial’s difficulties on and off the pitch have taken a toll on his mental state, making it difficult for him to approach training with a clear mind.
"I think Anthony Martial should ask himself, ‘Do I still want to be a professional footballer?’" Petit said. "Because I have the feeling that the last few years were very difficult for him on and off the pitch."
Martial’s departure from United marks the end of an era, and while AEK Athens will be excited to have him on board, the question remains whether the Frenchman has the motivation to succeed at the highest level.
