Gary Neville breaks social media silence to comment on bombshell report that ‘needs addressing’

Gary Neville Slams UEFA’s Threats Over Independent Football Regulator

Gary Neville has returned to Twitter to post a statement regarding the bombshell report surrounding the proposed independent football regulator for English football. The Manchester United legend was on commentary duty for Sky Sports during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Tottenham in the north London derby, but instead of discussing the match, he jumped onto social media to address the concerns surrounding the regulator.

Neville is a strong advocate for the introduction of the independent regulator, which is aimed at preventing clubs from falling into serious financial difficulty. The regulator was part of the Football Governance Bill, which did not pass through Parliament under the previous Conservative Government before its mandatory shutdown in May ahead of the General Election. However, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reintroduced the plans when he and Labour took office in July.

According to UEFA, the independent regulator could lead to punishments such as England being banned from Euro 2028 – a tournament it is due to host. This, along with the possibility of English teams being banned from the Champions League, has raised concerns among fans and officials alike.

Neville, however, is not convinced by UEFA’s threats. He labelled the possibility of a UEFA ban as "scaremongering" and "misinformation". He stated that the regulator will have no impact on the quality of the Premier League, but will importantly protect the wider game and pyramid.
