Yamal’s Scintillating Start: Can the 17-Year-Old Reach Messi’s Level?
Barcelona’s 4-1 thrashing of Girona in the Catalan derby has left fans and pundits alike in awe of the Blaugrana’s latest sensation, Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old winger has started the new LaLiga season in blistering form, and his coach, Míchel, believes he has the potential to reach the same level as the great Lionel Messi.
Yamal’s two goals in seven first-half minutes effectively killed the game, showcasing his lightning-quick speed and clinical finishing. The Spain international now leads the league in goal contributions with seven, ahead of his teammates Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
Girona coach Míchel was full of praise for Yamal, saying, "Lamine is a difference-maker. For me, he is already one of the best players in the world at 17 years of age. It is difficult to imagine that after Messi another [like him] would come along, but I hope that Lamine keeps improving because he’s a player than can reach that level."
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was equally impressed, saying, "I was really happy because he scored the goal. Lamine normally gives the last pass and I was happy that he scored today." Flick also praised the team’s high press, which led to Yamal’s opening goal, saying, "We started the match very concentrated, very focused and we pressed them really good."
Yamal’s form has been a major factor in Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the season, and his coach believes he has the potential to become a key player for the club. "We go now with the confidence we have built up over the last matches, you can see it also today, about our lines, about how we stay as a unit, very compact and very high," Flick said.
However, the game ended on a sour note, with Ferran Torres receiving a straight red card for a foul on Yáser Asprilla, and Olmo going off with an injury. Flick said Olmo will undergo tests on Monday to determine the nature of the hamstring problem, but there is optimism he will not be sidelined for long.
As Barcelona prepare to kick off their Champions League campaign at Monaco on Thursday, fans will be eagerly awaiting the next installment of Yamal’s story. Can he continue to defy his years and reach the same level as Messi? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – Yamal is a player to watch.
