Bundesliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen Eye Up £20m Liverpool Midfielder Tyler Morton
Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen side are on the hunt for reinforcements ahead of the new season, and it seems they’ve set their sights on Liverpool’s highly-rated academy product, Tyler Morton. The German club has already bolstered their squad with the signings of Martin Terrier, Jeanuël Belocian, and Aleix Garcia, and now they’re looking to add some quality to their midfield.
Morton, a 21-year-old English midfielder, has made a name for himself in the Championship on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. He’s a technical player with a keen eye for goal and has impressed coaches and teammates alike with his work rate and tenacity.
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was a big fan of Morton’s early on, praising his abilities and warning him that he needs to work on his physique. Speaking in 2021, Klopp said: "If he gets a body, he’s a brilliant footballer. There are obviously some things to come physique-wise, but the football brain is outstanding."
Morton himself acknowledges the need for improvement, stating: "I feel like I can improve in every single aspect of my game, to be honest. I’m still young. I’m still learning the game. As time goes on, I will continue to improve."
Leverkusen are willing to spend up to £20m to bring Morton to the BayArena, and the midfielder’s representatives are understood to be exploring all options. A season-long loan with an option to buy could be the sweet spot for both parties.
If Leverkusen can pull off the signing, it would be a major coup for the German club. Morton has the potential to be a key player in their midfield, offering a mix of creativity, work rate, and goal-scoring threat.
