Xabi Alonso Won’t Save Manchester United From Their Crisis
Manchester United’s season is spiraling out of control, with the team winless in five games and sitting in 14th place in the Premier League. Erik ten Hag’s job is under serious threat, and the media is already circling with potential replacements. One name that’s been thrown into the mix is Xabi Alonso, but it’s unlikely he’d be willing to join United given his strong affiliation with Liverpool.
Alonso’s comments about Liverpool in 2022 suggest he still has a deep connection to the club. "Once a Red, always a Red," he said on Liverpool’s website. "It’s not a logo, I think it’s a reality. Not just my case, I think that most of us feel really close to the club." He also praised the club’s global fan base, saying, "Wherever you are in the world, Liverpool fans remember you and they keep you closer to the club."
Given this, it’s hard to see Alonso choosing Manchester United over Liverpool. United’s hierarchy may need to look elsewhere for a solution to their crisis.
A Private Agreement in Place?
ESPN claims that there is a "private agreement" amongst United chiefs that they are not keen on sacking Erik ten Hag. This decision is reportedly due to the £200 million spent in the summer, which hasn’t yielded the desired results. United’s co-chairman, Joel Glazer, is set to fly in for a meeting in London to discuss the club’s situation.
Will United Find a Solution?
Manchester United’s struggles show no signs of easing, and it’s hard to see a quick turnaround. With a home game against Brentford on 19 October, United need to find a solution, and fast. Will it be Alonso, or another manager? Only time will tell.
