Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League Victory Raises Concerns Over Son Heung-Min’s Availability for Manchester United Clash
Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their Europa League campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Azerbaijan’s Qarabag, but the victory was marred by concerns over the availability of star player Son Heung-Min for the upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United.
The 32-year-old South Korean international was substituted in the 71st minute against Qarabag after clutching the back of his thigh, sparking worries that he may not be fit enough to face the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Footage from the match showed Son receiving medical attention on the pitch before being replaced by Timo Werner, fuelling speculation that he may be struggling with an injury. When asked about Son’s condition, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was coy, saying that he hadn’t spoken to the player or medical staff yet.
This latest concern comes on the back of Son’s recent comments advocating for a reduction in the number of matches played during a season. The Premier League star echoed the views of Manchester City’s Rodri and Liverpool’s Allison, stating that the grueling schedule is taking a toll on players’ mental and physical well-being.
"It’s definitely a lot of games, a lot of travelling [so] we have to look after ourselves which is sometimes very hard, and sometimes mentally and physically you’re not ready and when you’re going onto the pitch then the risk of injury is massive," Son said. "We are not robots, so I think we just definitely have to look after that and definitely reduce the games and can play a better quality of game. I think this should be the aim."
Given Son’s importance to Spurs’ attack, his availability for the Manchester United game will be a major concern for the Tottenham faithful. The team’s chances of causing an upset at Old Trafford will depend heavily on his fitness, and fans will be eagerly awaiting the release of the teamsheets on Sunday to see if their star player is involved or not.
