Why Cole Palmer’s goal vs Wolves should NOT have stood due to little-known rule

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Scores World-Class Goal, But It Shouldn’t Have Stood

The Premier League is full of surprises, and Chelsea’s 6-2 thrashing of Wolves on Sunday was no exception. One of the standout moments of the match was Cole Palmer’s stunning goal, which has been hailed as one of the best of the season. However, a closer look at the footage reveals that the goal should have been disallowed due to a little-known rule.

Palmer’s goal, the third of the match, was a beauty. He capitalised on a mistake from Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, lobbing him when he had come off his line shortly before half-time. But, as beIN SPORTS pointed out, the pass from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to striker Nicolas Jackson was illegal. The ball was rolling when Sanchez kicked it, which is not allowed under Premier League rules.

Slow-motion footage shows that the ball was indeed rolling, and host Richard Keys correctly pointed out that the goal should have been disallowed. "It’s rolling. Strictly speaking, it should be disallowed," he said. However, since VAR officials are not instructed to check for restarts, the goal was allowed to stand.

Luckily for Palmer and Chelsea, the goal was still a highlight-reel moment, and fans took to social media to praise the young star. He had already assisted the match opener from Jackson, and his two further assists in the match helped create two chances for teammate Noni Madueke, who scored a second-half hat-trick.

Chelsea’s next match will be the second leg of their Europa Conference League play-off match against Swiss club Servette, who they defeated 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the opener of the tie. In the Premier League, The Blues will face fellow London club Crystal Palace next time out.
