What happened to Liverpool’s two weirdest-ever signings three years on?

The Strange Signing Saga at Liverpool: Where are Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies Now?

Liverpool’s recent recruitment has been subject to plenty of scrutiny and hype, but there are two signings in particular that stand out for being wildly unusual. We’re talking about Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies, both of whom joined the Reds in February 2021 amidst a defensive injury crisis.

Kabak, a Turkish center-back, came to Anfield on a four-month loan from Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in a deal worth up to £1.5 million. While he made 13 appearances, the Reds ultimately decided not to activate the option to buy his loan. Kabak went on to penned a heartfelt farewell message, writing: "Dear Liverpool family, I would like to thank you for the compassion and support you have shown towards me since the day I arrived. I was proud to be part of this special family. I will always remember my days here at Liverpool with great happiness and the special song which you have kindly gifted me."

After failing to establish himself at the Prem, Kabak went on to have a loan stint with newly-promoted Norwich City for the 2021/22 season, followed by a switch to fellow Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim on a four-year deal. At the moment, he’s enjoying a decent run of games under his belt.

Meanwhile, Davies, a central defender, arrived at the Liverpool on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee. However, things didn’t go as planned. The Englishman never managed a senior appearance for the Reds, instead opting for a season-long loan deal with Sheffield United – only for the two to later agree a permanent transfer to Rangers in the summer of 2022.

So, how’s that working out? As of yet, Davies has racked up 58 appearances for the Scottish giants but has lately joined Birmingham City on a short-term loan. Although we won’t be holding our breath for instant results, let’s see what the future holds.
