Wayne Rooney Landed Plymouth Job After Mastering One Non-Football Question – But Can He Turn The Club’s Fortunes Around?
Wayne Rooney’s time as Plymouth Argyle manager got off to a rough start over the weekend, as Sheffield Wednesday beat the Championship club 4-0. But, as it turns out, Rooney’s appointment wasn’t a straightforward one. According to Plymouth’s director of football, Neil Dewsnip, Rooney was hired after impressing during his interview with a peculiar question.
"We asked him about relationships and dealing with staff," Dewsnip explained. "He was asked what members of staff he knew at Derby outside the football set-up, and straightaway he told him the name of a groundsman and the laundry lady. He’s got great people skills and that’s important to us."
Rooney’s appointment has raised eyebrows, given his inconsistent managerial record. He was sacked by Birmingham City after just 15 games, having won only two matches. However, Dewsnip is optimistic that Rooney can get the best out of the Plymouth squad, who narrowly escaped relegation to League One last season.
"The squad have taken to him incredibly well," Dewsnip added. "They obviously respect him for what he was as a player, one of the best three of his generation. But respect has to be earned as a coach, and his way of doing that is to show his great personal qualities."
Rooney’s people skills were put to the test on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether his ability to connect with staff can translate to success on the pitch. Plymouth’s fate is far from certain, but one thing is for sure – Rooney has a tough road ahead of him.
