The Premier League is taking a hard stance against illegal streaming, and fans are being warned to avoid the dangers of digital piracy. In a bold move, BeStreamWise, a cross-body initiative, has been launched to counter illegal streaming, targeting fans who try to access pirated content.
During last weekend’s North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal, BeStreamWise intercepted fans searching for illegal streams, sending a strong message to those who still engage in digital piracy. The initiative is a partnership between the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), the Intellectual Property Office, Crimestoppers UK, and the Premier League, along with broadcasters BBC, Sky, and ITV.
" Illegal streaming not only undermines the hard work of content creators and rights holders but also exposes viewers to significant risks such as identity theft, fraud, and malware," said Kieron Sharp, CEO of FACT.
The warning comes as the Premier League faces a surge in illegal streaming, with millions of fans worldwide risking their personal security to watch matches online. Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, emphasized the gravity of the situation: "Illegal streaming poses a serious threat and can expose consumers to identity theft, fraud, and malicious software."
BeStreamWise is not just a warning system; it’s an educational campaign aimed at protecting fans and raising awareness about the risks involved in digital piracy. Miles Rees, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the Intellectual Property Office, highlighted the broader implications of piracy: "Piracy is anything but a victimless crime. It has clear links to other harmful activities and materials online, actively sustaining serious and organised crime networks while diverting funds away from the sporting occasions we all enjoy."
