Paris Olympics Kicks Off with Major Controversies Ahead
The 2024 Olympics have finally arrived in Paris, but things haven’t gotten off to the most thrilling start. Two teams with previous Olympic victories won’t be participating this time around – Team GB and Team Russia.
But before we dive into the juicy stuff, let’s set the scene: the official opening ceremony took place on Friday night along the iconic River Seine. This was a first, folks – no more boring stadium ceremonies for us! Some sports have already begun, with the football tournament getting underway with a major delay during the Argentina vs Morocco match. Don’t worry, it didn’t dampen the mood as France, managed by the legend himself Thierry Henry, trounced the US 3-0.
The GB Squad Shuffle
So, why the heck is Team GB missing out? It all boils down to an agreement (or lack thereof) between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to participate under the GB flag. These countries need to come to a consensus for players to don the red, white, and blue jersey. Remember that disastrous Team GB squad that played in 2012? Aaron Ramsey, Daniel Sturridge, and Micah Richards were some of the familiar faces on that roster. Sadly, we won’t see a repeat of that team anytime soon.
Russia’s Pariah Status
Meanwhile, individual athletes from Russia and Belarus have been invited to participate in the Paris Olympics under a neutral banner. Yeah, good luck with that! Their involvement was banned due to Russia’s ill-advised invasion of Ukraine – an act that has received zero tolerance from the international community. In fact, reports indicate that only 15 Russians and 17 Belarusians will be competing this time around, a massive drop from the Tokyo Games’ totals of 335 Russians and 105 Belarusians. Maybe the strict criteria set by the Olympic committee will keep the heat off these nations.
