The Real Madrid Draw: Can Trent Alexander-Arnold Resist the Temptation of La Liga’s Powerhouse?
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has thrown cold water on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential move to Real Madrid, citing the challenges the right-back could face in displacing Dani Carvajal in the starting lineup.
As the Reds’ top performer, Alexander-Arnold has attracted attention from Los Blancos, with Jude Bellingham, his England teammate and Real Madrid star, allegedly pushing for a move to Anfield. But Carragher warns that Carvajal, a UEFA Champions League and La Liga winner, won’t surrender his spot easily.
"He’s only won the European Cup six times and the Euros in the summer, so I don’t think he’d be too happy about it," Carragher said on Sky Sports. Alexander-Arnold, 25, has one year remaining on his contract and could be enticed by Real Madrid’s offer, but Carragher believes the full-back should carefully consider his options.
"What do you want for the rest of your life?" he questioned. "He’s in the dream position as a footballer – one year left on your contract, he could see how this year goes, he can wait until Christmas… It will be interesting how it plays out."
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is focused on ensuring the best performances from the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold. While contract negotiations are ongoing, Slot’s main priority is bringing success to the Reds.
"If we bring the best out of them and they perform really well then it’s up to them if they want to sign and us if we give them a new contract," Slot said. "My main focus is on Brentford and not on contract extensions."
