Real Madrid’s Bobby: The Unlikely Nickname for Brazilian Teenage Sensation Endrick
Real Madrid’s latest acquisition, Endrick, has been making waves in the Spanish capital with his impressive start to life at the club. The 18-year-old Brazilian striker has already scored two goals in his five appearances for Los Blancos, including a historic Champions League goal that made him the youngest ever goalscorer for the club.
But what’s caught everyone’s attention is his unusual nickname – ‘Bobby’. Given to him by his teammates, the moniker is a nod to the late Sir Bobby Charlton, a Manchester United legend who was part of the Busby Babes squad that was decimated in the Munich Air Disaster in 1958.
So, why ‘Bobby’? According to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, it was Endrick’s teammate who got the nickname twisted. "He told me that he had been misinterpreted, that what he wanted to refer to had been changed a bit, or something like that," Courtois revealed in an interview with streaming star Ibai Llanos.
But it seems the nickname has stuck, and Endrick’s compatriot Rodrygo is happy to perpetuate the joke. "Now he’s Bobby. He’s not Endrick anymore. He’s caught on to that joke," Rodrygo said in an interview with ESPN Brazil.
Despite the unusual nickname, Endrick has already won over his teammates with his quality on the pitch. "The reception he’s had there (at Real Madrid) is good, not just from the Brazilians. We have a very good group at Real, and it’s no different with him," Rodrygo added.
As Endrick continues to make a name for himself at Real Madrid, it’s clear that he’s already won over the hearts of his teammates. Will he continue to score goals and make headlines? Only time will tell.
