Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United Future in Jeopardy? Steve McClaren Weighs In
The uncertainty surrounding Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United continues to simmer, and former United assistant coach Steve McClaren has shed some light on the Dutchman’s tenure at Old Trafford. McClaren, who spent two seasons at United before becoming the Jamaica national team coach, believes the 4-0 loss to Crystal Palace last season was the moment when he felt Ten Hag’s job was in jeopardy.
Speaking to Sky Sports, McClaren reflected on Ten Hag’s first season at United, which began with consecutive Premier League losses to Brighton and Brentford. "Every day at Manchester United you’re under pressure," McClaren said. "I lived with him for two years. On many, many occasions. After Brighton and Brentford [fans were] calling for his head after two games, and then [we] beat Liverpool 3-0."
McClaren acknowledged that Ten Hag has the qualities to stick to the process, but the pressure is mounting with United’s inconsistent form continuing this season. The Red Devils currently sit 14th in the Premier League table, and a loss to Aston Villa today could further fuel speculation about Ten Hag’s future.
Despite the challenges, McClaren believes Ten Hag has made significant progress at United. "The atmosphere was great and the players they were recruiting were very good and the squad was building and developing," he said. However, the question remains: can Ten Hag turn things around and lead United to a successful season, or will the pressure ultimately prove too much for him to handle?
