Euro 2024: Spain Receive Boost as World-Class Star "Joins Squad" for Final Clash with England
The news is music to the ears of La Roja fans – a world-class player has "returned" to the Spain squad to give them an unexpected boost ahead of their Euro 2024 final clash with England. Yes, you read that right!
Barcelona youngster Gavi, who has been out of action since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in November, is set to join the squad in Berlin after missing the tournament through injury. The 19-year-old midfielder would have been included in Luis de la Fuente’s 26-man squad had he not suffered the injury, but it looks like he’s made a stunning recovery.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Gavi accepted an invite from De La Fuente to link up with the squad and caught a Spanish FA (RFEF) charter flight to Berlin on Sunday morning. The youngster is said to be excited about experiencing the occasion with his teammates, while the Spanish players are delighted that he will be joining them.
The Spain squad has been on a tear throughout the tournament, winning all six of their matches en route to the final. England, on the other hand, have underwhelmed, although Gareth Southgate’s side produced a much-improved performance in a 2-1 semi-final defeat of the Netherlands.
It’s unclear what role Gavi will play in the final, but his inclusion is a massive boost for Spain. De La Fuente is expected to select a similar team to the one that beat France 2-1 in the semi-finals. Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal is expected to come back into the side after serving a one-match suspension, but it’s unclear whether Robin Le Normand or Nacho Fernandez will partner Aymeric Laporte in central defence.
For England, this news couldn’t come at a worse time. The Three Lions have been struggling to find their form, and now they’ll be facing a Spain side with an added motivation. Will Gavi’s return give Spain the edge they need to win the title? Only time will tell.
