Spain Risk Breaking German Employment Law by Playing Teenager Lamine Yamal in Euro 2024 Final
Lamine Yamal is set to make history by becoming the youngest player to feature in a European Championship final when Spain takes on England on Sunday. However, his potential debut could come with a controversy surrounding German employment law.
Yamal, who will turn 17 just days before the final, is set to play in the biggest game of his young career. But, if the match goes into extra time or a penalty shootout, Spain could face a fine of €30,000 (£25,000) for violating German employment law.
According to Cadena Cope, German law prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from working past 8pm. Athletes, however, are allowed to participate until 11pm. But, if Spain plays into extra time or beyond, they would be breaking the law, regardless of the athlete’s age.
Lamine Yamal has already made history by becoming the youngest player to score a goal in the Euros, and now he’s set to make an appearance in the final. But, it’s not just his skill on the pitch that’s making headlines.
Manager Luis de la Fuente believes Yamal’s maturity and work ethic are a key factor in his development, saying, "We’ve seen a genius, the product of a genius… He’s a player we have to take care of… He would keep growing, but this maturity and attitude at such a young age is like that of a more experienced player."
Will Spain take the risk of facing a fine to give Yamal the chance to play in the biggest game of his life? Only time will tell.
