Sky’s the Limit: Did You Catch Gary Neville’s Edgy Moment?
Liverpool’s 3-0 thrashing of Manchester United at Old Trafford has set tongues wagging, with Erik ten Hag’s tactics coming under scrutiny. Add to that the crux of United’s problem areas, and you’ll struggle to find a fan at the Theatre of Dreams looking forward to the rest of the season. However, it was Gary Neville, the Sky Sports co-pundit, who added a bit of comedy value to the proceedings with some, ahem, well-timed commentary.
Take Kobbie Mainoo, the 19-year-old midfielder, for example. Neville was quick to praise the youngster, opining that he’s "[…] fine, receives the ball in tight areas,… he was." Big compliment, right? But somehow, Sky Sports edited his words out of their Match Highlights package. Yes, you read that right.
Instead of Neville’s thumbs-up, we’re given Peter Drury’s expert analysis: "Mainoo bullied off it by Mac Allister." Maybe "bully" isn’t the right word; Manchester United fans might call that a "tack on" instead. We could be here all day bickering about nuances; the point is, where did Neville’s complimentary intro go?
To fill your curiosity, Sky later did release a Comms cam video on their YouTube channel, which included the bit where Neville’s glowing appraisals of Mainoo were mercilessly shredded via a snicker from team-mate Jamie Carragher. Good times! Let’s face it; anyone who’s watched that segment knows the value of humility, especially when faced with the likes of Salah-fest 2024 on the pitch.
It will be interesting to see Sky’s take on their clip-cutting ways; either way, this Gary gaffe will go down as one of the highlights(?) of the 2-0 loss to top-six rivals. Make or break for United?
