Shock Premier League Club in Talks to Sign Mats Hummels
In a stunning move, Brighton and Hove Albion are reportedly in advanced talks to sign German defender Mats Hummels as a free agent. The 35-year-old left Borussia Dortmund at the end of the 2023-2024 season, and has since been linked with several top clubs across Europe.
According to Sky Germany, Brighton’s coach Fabian Hurzeler has been in talks with Hummels, discussing the club’s project, his ambition, and more. The Seagulls are said to be very open to signing the experienced center-back, who has not yet made a final decision on whether to continue his career or hang up his boots.
Hummels, a World Cup winner with Germany, has spent the majority of his career in the Bundesliga, playing for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. He has also had stints in the Premier League with Manchester City and Arsenal.
This move would be a significant coup for Brighton, who have been building a strong squad over the summer. They have already signed several players, including midfielder Amario Cozier-Duberry from Arsenal, Malick Junior Yalcouye from IFK Goteborg, and Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United.
Brighton’s new coach, Fabian Hurzeler, has been working hard to integrate the new signings and get the team ready for the new season. Speaking after their pre-season win over Queens Park Rangers, he said: "We are not where we want to be, but we are going in the right direction. We are happy, we know we’re not perfect, but we also know that the process takes time."
The addition of Hummels would be a major boost to Brighton’s defense, which has been a weakness in recent seasons. The German defender is known for his leadership, experience, and defensive prowess, and would be a valuable asset to the Seagulls.
