This could be a massive statement from Mikel Arteta
According to a report from The Mirror, a shock Premier League side has entered the race for Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez, amidst rumors of a fall-out with Pep Guardiola. The 24-year-old Argentine striker has been linked with a move away from the Etihad this summer, and Arsenal could be the team to make a bid.
Alvarez joined City from River Plate in 2022 for around £14m and has since won the Treble, claiming the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in his first season. He has also won the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, and has been capped 14 times for Argentina, scoring 6 goals.
Despite being a regular goal-scorer, Alvarez has struggled for game time behind Erling Haaland, starting just 44 of his 67 Premier League appearances for City. With Gabriel Jesus failing to deliver as expected, Arsenal could see Alvarez as a solution to their striker woes.
The report claims that it would take an overall package of around £80million for City to consider letting Alvarez go, which could be a challenge for Arsenal. However, with several departures expected at the Emirates, including Emile Smith-Rowe, the Gunners may have the financial flexibility to make a move.
Alvarez has the pace, skill, and finishing ability to be a top-notch striker in the Premier League, and would undoubtedly be a statement signing for Arsenal. But would he be worth the reported £80million price tag?
