A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a vendor in the pantry car of a moving train near Itarsi railway station in Madhya Pradesh, a senior Government Railway Police (GRP) official said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the middle night of Friday and Saturday in the pantry car of the Sampark Kranti Express, which operates between Yeshwantpur (Bengaluru) and Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi), said Hitesh Choudhary, Superintendent of Police (SP) of the GRP.

The alleged defendant, who was hiding on the train, was seized at the Jhansi railway station, it said.

The victim had boarded the AC carriage of the train as an unauthorized passenger in Bhusawal, Maharashtra, when a railway employee told him to go to the general carriage, the official said.

Instead of going to the general coach, however, the woman entered the pantry car, where she was allegedly raped by a salesman, she said.

The victim got off at Bhopal and recounted the ordeal to the GRP, the SP said.

After stopping for half an hour, the train moved while police questioned some of the vendors, he said.

Later, based on information shared by the woman, who appeared mentally disturbed, a suspected defendant was caught from the train in Jhansi this morning, the official said.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is underway, it added.
