Keane Slams Sels’ Goalkeeping: "Fined a Week’s Wages"
The Premier League season has been full of surprises, and today’s match between Brighton and Nottingham Forest was no exception. The two teams continued their unbeaten starts to the season, drawing 2-2 in an eventful encounter. But it was the performance of Forest’s goalkeeper, Matz Sels, that left many scratching their heads.
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was having none of it, blasting Sels’ decision-making on the pitch. Speaking on the commentary panel, Keane called for Sels to be fined "a week’s wages" after he failed to keep out Danny Welbeck’s free kick goal.
"It’s one of those… the goalkeeper has got to be doing better there," said Theo Walcott, Keane’s fellow commentator. But Keane was having none of it, insisting that Sels’ mistake was inexcusable.
"You can’t be beaten on that side," Keane said. "He’s leaned to that side, I’d fine him a week’s wages. It’s so poor. He’s taken a gamble, leaned to his right… You can’t be beaten on that side."
The stats back up Keane’s argument. Sels has been one of the most error-prone goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, with a save percentage of just 64.7%. And it’s not just Keane who’s been critical of his performance. Forest fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with one fan tweeting: "What on earth was Sels doing there? Just absolutely rooted to the spot. Seriously need better in January."
The match was chaotic, with both managers being sent off after Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White received a red card for a horrific challenge on Joao Pedro. The Premier League has since confirmed that the managers received a red card for "unacceptable technical area behaviour".
So, what can Forest do to improve their goalkeeping situation? Well, it’s clear that Sels is not the answer. The Belgian international has struggled to impress since joining the club in 2019, and it’s time for Forest to consider bringing in a new ‘keeper.
