Roy Keane Admits to Apologizing to Manchester United Player for "Crossing the Line" with His Criticism
Roy Keane is known for his unapologetic and brutally honest opinions as a football pundit. However, even the most esteemed and experienced experts can occasionally step out of line. In a recent episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football, Keane revealed that he personally apologized to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire for his harsh criticism during a difficult period in Maguire’s career.
Maguire, 31, has faced significant backlash in the past for his performances on the pitch, but he has managed to silence his critics with an impressive resurgence in form over the past 12 months. Keane was among those who had some scathing words for the England international, but he now acknowledges that he went too far.
"I was harsh on Harry Maguire for footballing reasons, and obviously we do a lot of Manchester United matches," Keane explained. "Obviously he’s struggled at United and had a tough time with England, but more so at club level. We’re on about the mental health of players, and I’ve crossed the line with Maguire. I mocked him a little bit, and it’s not nice. I’ve played the game, I know how hard it is. But I’m also big enough. I bumped into Harry a few months ago and I apologized to him."
This revelation highlights the importance of maintaining a level of decorum and respect when delivering criticism. While it’s understandable that pundits like Keane have strong opinions and may want to express themselves, there’s a fine line between constructive criticism and personal attacks.
Keane also reflected on his own experiences with criticism during his playing career, revealing that it took a toll on his parents. "I’ve had big stories about me in the press before, particularly the World Cup and when I left Manchester United," he said. "It has a huge effect on your family, particularly your parents. I’ve got children, and if someone was critical of my child, I’d be affected. It made my parents ill, 100 per cent. They were very ill from that stuff."
The former Manchester United captain emphasized the need for pundits to be responsible with their words and actions, adding that it’s crucial to strike a balance between holding players accountable and treating them with respect. "I know we all sit in a studio, but if you stick it to football and not cross the line," he urged.
At 90min, we believe that fair and respectful criticism is essential in helping players improve and driving the sport forward. However, we also acknowledge the importance of empathy and understanding, particularly when it comes to the mental well-being of athletes.
