Ronaldo: Man United need to ‘rebuild everything’

Ronaldo Lays Bare Manchester United’s True State: Total Rebuild Needed

Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo has warned that the Red Devils need a complete overhaul, and we couldn’t agree more. The 39-year-old forward, who currently plays for Al Nassr, spoke candidly about his time at Old Trafford, the club’s current situation, and his unceremonious departure in November 2022.

In a recent interview, Ronaldo stressed that the team needs to rebuild from the bottom up, investing in their training ground and youth academy. He pointed out that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 27.7% stake in the club is a positive development, but patience will be needed to return to the top tier of club football.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has first-hand experience with United’s struggles, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances across two stints with the club. Ronaldo criticized the team for not investing in the past 13 years, stating that it’s impossible to compete at the highest level without a significant overhaul.

"I said what I have to say, and for me, it’s done," Ronaldo said. "But I wish for Manchester [United] what I wish for me – the best. The best they can make, again, the best team they can [have], and I love that club."

Erik ten Hag: A Systematic Problem?

Ronaldo also shared his thoughts on former United manager Erik ten Hag, who he felt lacked the right mentality to push the team to win the league or Champions League. "You cannot say you’re not going to fight to win the League or Champions League," Ronaldo emphasized. "You have to try."

This sentiment resonates with many United fans, who felt that the Dutch coach’s tactics and player selection were often off-target. Ten Hag’s struggles at Old Trafford might not be solely his fault, though – the lack of quality players and an ineffective squad might have limited his ability to succeed.

A Brighter Future?

The appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy as ten Hag’s assistant manager is a step in the right direction. The former United striker has intimate knowledge of the club and its fans, and could help improve the team’s performances.

United still have time to turn things around, but it will require a collective effort from the board, coaching staff, and players. One thing is certain – if the team fails to take immediate action, they’ll be left stuck in neutral, struggling to compete with the best clubs in Europe.
