PSG on the Brink of Champions League Ban Over Mbappe Payment Dispute
In a shocking turn of events, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is facing the very real possibility of being banned from the Champions League this season due to a dispute with their former star player Kylian Mbappe. According to reports, Mbappe is yet to receive €55 million (£46.8m) from his final contract with the French club, which has led to a serious escalation of the situation.
The 25-year-old French international left PSG this summer to join Real Madrid, but the dispute surrounding his departure has continued to simmer. Mbappe’s legal team has sent a formal notice to PSG, claiming that the club has failed to pay the final instalment of his signing bonus worth €36 million (£30.6m), as well as three months of wages from April to June.
The involvement of the French Professional Football League (LFP) could have severe consequences for PSG. The LFP has the power to enforce a transfer ban on the club, as well as strip them of their UEFA license, which would result in an immediate ban from the Champions League.
PSG claims that Mbappe’s wage arrears are justified by ‘commitments’ made by the player to renounce them in the event of a departure as a free agent. However, it is claimed that ‘no agreement has been ratified between the two parties since 2023 on the matter’.
This dispute has serious implications for PSG’s participation in the Champions League this season. According to UEFA regulations, any club taking part in UEFA competitions must provide proof they have no salary outstanding payments to their personnel due no later than February 28 preceding the license season. Therefore, PSG is at risk of losing their UEFA club license granted for the 2024/25 campaign if the matter with Mbappe is not resolved.
