Premier League Club Slams PGMOL Over Controversial VAR Decision
In a shocking turn of events, a Premier League club has requested the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) to investigate a VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decision that has left many scratching their heads. The controversy surrounds a goal scored by Crystal Palace in their 2-2 draw with Leicester City at Selhurst Park last weekend.
According to reports, Leicester City have officially submitted a complaint to the PGMOL, claiming that the goal should not have stood due to an offside decision. The goal in question was scored by Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 47th minute, and VAR deemed it onside after an on-field official had initially flagged it offside.
However, Leicester City manager Steve Cooper is adamant that VAR got it wrong, stating that Mateta was in an offside position when defender Tyrick Mitchell crossed the ball to him. Cooper called for the evidence used to make the decision to be released, saying: "If it is, no problem, we’ll hold our hands up. But we can’t be calling offsides on suggestions, which is only what we’ve seen at the moment. We need to get that image quickly off the Premier League. If it is, I’ll accept it."
The result has left both teams with identical records from the opening four matches of the season, with each team drawing two matches and losing the others. The controversy has sparked debate about the use of VAR in the Premier League, with many calling for improvements to the system.
In the Premier League, several cameras equipped with Hawk-Eye technology are used when consulting VAR about an offside decision. According to the Premier League’s website, Hawk-Eye can use any broadcast camera to identify the point of contact with the ball by the attacker, and synchronizes all cameras for this purpose.
The use of VAR has been a topic of discussion in the Premier League, with many criticizing its implementation. While some argue that it has improved the accuracy of decisions, others claim that it has introduced unnecessary controversy and confusion.
As the debate rages on, it’s clear that the PGMOL has its work cut out for it. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story and bringing you updates as they become available.
