Premier League chief speaks out on Man City 115 charges hearing with ‘relegation possible if club found guilty’

Manchester City’s 115-Charge Hearing Begins: Will the Blues Dodge the Bullet or Face the Music?

Premier League chief Richard Masters has weighed in on Manchester City’s impending hearing, which is expected to last approximately two months. As reported by ESPN, the hearing commences on September 16, addressing the 115 charges brought forth by the league against the Premier League’s reigning champions.

Let’s get the context straight – back in February 2023, the Premier League initially charged City with regulatory breaches after opening an investigation into their activities five years prior. Over a 14-season period (from 2009/10 onwards), the clubs are alleged to have breached regulations in numerous ways, including:

  • 54 counts of failing to provide accurate information
  • 14 counts of failing to provide accurate details for player and manager payments
  • 7 counts of breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR)
  • 5 counts of failing to comply with UEFA regulations (FFP) regulations
  • 35 counts of failing to cooperate with Premier League investigations (from 2018 onwards)

Manchester City’s vehemently denying these allegations, arguing that their integrity remains under scrutiny. Given the complexity of these 115 charges, it’s essential the matter gets resolved ASAP.

That’s why Richard Masters, the Premier League chief executive, stresses the need for prompt resolutions. "It’s been going on for a number of years, and it’s time for the case to resolve itself," he insists. Masters continues, "Enforcing the rules matters; it creates uncertainty and frustration. We must uphold fair play for all teams in the competition. The sooner we settle these charges, the better for the Premier League."
