Phil Jones Opens Up on Mental Health Struggles and the Trauma of Online Abuse
In a candid interview, former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has spoken out about the mental health struggles he faced during his playing career, including the trauma caused by online abuse.
Jones, 32, announced his retirement from professional football in August after years of battling injuries. The former England international spent 12 years with United, but was limited to just 229 appearances due to persistent knee issues.
In an emotional interview, Jones revealed that he struggled to cope with the constant criticism and abuse he received online. He explained that he felt like he was living with a "mask" on, trying to hide his emotions and feelings from the public eye.
"I’d been through that much trauma mentally," Jones said. "You get paid a lot of money so you are not allowed to have feelings or emotions. The physical injuries made me mentally weak at times."
Jones also opened up about the abuse he suffered in everyday life, revealing that he would often hear cruel comments from strangers in the street. He recalled feeling anxious and depressed, struggling to even go out to restaurants or walk in crowds without feeling self-conscious.
"It was a relief off my shoulders that I didn’t have to put myself through this pain," Jones said. "I found it really hard to go to restaurants for years. You put your head down when you’re walking through crowds and stuff. I didn’t want people to spot me."
The retired defender also spoke about the impact his mental health struggles had on his relationships, revealing that he even asked his wife to remove displays of his England caps and Premier League winners trophy from their home because he felt "worthless".
But Jones is now focusing on the future, revealing that he is looking to move into a career in coaching or management. He is currently working with youngsters at United and is excited to see what the future holds.
"I’m looking forward to the future and I’m positive about it," Jones said. "I’m excited to see where my career takes me and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from my family and friends."
It’s a powerful message from a former professional athlete who has been through some tough times. As footballers, we often forget that they are human beings with feelings and emotions just like the rest of us. It’s time we started treating them with the respect and compassion they deserve.
