PGMOL Make Huge Decision on Official Who Was ‘Banned’ From Officiating Liverpool Matches Last Season

Darren England, the referee who was removed from officiating Liverpool games last season following a "significant" human error during the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, will be involved in a game involving the Anfield outfit for the first time in almost a year this Saturday.

Back in October last year, England’s mistake during the Premier League clash in North London caused quite a stir. Luis Díaz had a goal chalked off for offside, although replays clearly indicated he was onside. A day later, PGMOL admitted it was a "clear and obvious factual error" and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention.

The controversy led to England being axed from officiating Liverpool for the rest of the 2023/24 campaign. In fact, The Telegraph claimed that England’s mistake would affect him financially.

However, after almost a year away from Liverpool games, England will now be involved in their fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday as a fourth official. Anthony Taylor will referee the game at Molineux.

But what’s most telling is that PGMOL, the body responsible for referees in the Premier League, has finally admitted that it made a "significant" human error during that infamous match. It’s a move that will have implications for referees across the league.

So, how does this decision affect Liverpool? Well, for starters, it shows that even officials who make mistakes are given a second chance. And who knows, England’s experience could lead to some valuable insights and improved performances in the future.

However, the decision has sparked controversy among Liverpool fans, who feel that the error was so significant it shouldn’t be overlooked.

Ultimately, only time will tell if England’s mistake has a lasting impact on his career. But what’s clear is that this is a reminder that no one is above criticism in football, not even officials.
