I didn’t behave well, and I wish I could go back 20 years and do a better job."
The event left Schmeichel admitting, "I shouldn’t have done that. I thought I was going to sack, and I thought i was going to get blamed for everything. I even thought about quitting football forever." Fortunately, Schmeichel was able to re-evaluate his actions, apologize to the team for his behavior, and even had a heart-to heart with Ferguson, who helped him understand the gravity of his actions.

In the aftermath, Schmeichel reflected: "After the game we spoke, and he sort of explained to me [why he was angry]”. I said, apologize to the team, sort of explain what happened”.’ I think that shows how much respect I always had for him, still have for him, by being honest and taking stuff on the chin."
