PART 4: For the past decade, Perry Goyal has been facing a different challenge off the cricket pitch. The native of Patiala – part of Virat KohliThe 2008 champion side: He has been running his family’s real estate business, including a hotel chain started by his father, Radhey Shyam Goyal.

“As a cricketer, you live a different life and often stay aloof from what’s going on in the outside world. When I decided to quit cricket, it was a well thought out decision. I had always believed that the goal was not just to get into any team but to be able to play 50-100 games, and when I couldn’t do that, I made the decision to leave.

“In the beginning, it took me a while to understand things like the approvals, the build process, the sales network, but over time I learned it,” says Goyal, who has an MBA in family business management from SP Jain Institute, Mumbai. .

Goyal, a goalkeeper batsman, began training with coach Mahesh Inder Singh, father of Reetinder Singh Sodhi. Goyal rose through the Punjab U-15, U-17 and U-19 teams, but did not play for the Punjab senior team, although he did represent the PCA at the Buchi Babu tournament. The 2008 U-19 World Cup remains his only international tournament.

It was during his U-17 days that Goyal first saw Kohli during a tournament in Patiala. “He broke two hundred there. Later, when he was part of the India U-17 camp, Virat came to compete in the zonal U-19 tournament. The India U-19 team for the England The tour was going to be selected after that tournament and Virat’s form was not good.

“One day before the team announcement, some teammates spoke about Virat’s lack of form. “I’ll hit two hundred and be on the flight to England,” Virat replied. And that was what happened the next day,” says Goyal.

In the U-19 World Cup, Goyal failed to get a single game as first-choice goalkeeper Shreevats Goswami played every game. The tournament occurred when Goyal’s only sister was getting married. She missed the wedding and that’s his only regret.

“As a cricketer, I understand that I am playing while someone is sitting down and the same can happen to me. As Shreevats had performed well in previous tournaments, he was the first choice goalkeeper. Our coach Dav Whatmore also conveyed the same thing to me and I understood. We also understood that the victory of the team is also ours. Every time my mom called, she just asked me to bring the World Cup home and didn’t even ask me about my sister’s marriage.”

Goyal keeps in touch with his 2008 peers through social media. “I joined the Kings XI Punjab management in 2015 and met most of my U19 teammates during the IPL. We all keep in touch through social networks and share our moments of happiness. Recently, when Virat stepped down from the captaincy, we all supported his move.”

For Goyal, a memory stands out from the U-19 triumph. “Cricket taught me discipline and that has helped me a lot. I had taken an Indian flag with me to Malaysia. Waving the flag with my teammates after winning the trophy remains my greatest memory.”
