Pep Guardiola Names His Favourite Midfielder Among Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes
The debate among football fans is never-ending, and one of the most heated discussions surrounds the question: who is the greatest English midfielder of all time? Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has put an end to the debate, revealing his own favourite among the legendary trio of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes.
For many, it’s a tough decision. Gerrard, the inspirational leader of Liverpool’s Champions League-winning team, has a special place in many fans’ hearts. Lampard, on the other hand, boasts an impressive collection of Premier League and Champions League medals with Chelsea. But for Guardiola, there’s no contest.
When asked by Rio Ferdinand on his podcast, Guardiola said: "All respect to Frank [Lampard], to Steven [Gerrard] but Paul Scholes is my favourite one. I love it. I think he had everything but the other two, come on, Frank and Steven Gerrard changed this… Paul Scholes is my favourite."
Scholes is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. During his time at Manchester United, he won 11 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, and numerous other accolades. His vision, passing range, and set-piece expertise made him a force to be reckoned with.
It’s little surprise that Guardiola, known for his high-intensity, possession-based football, is a fan of Scholes. The Manchester City boss has built a reputation on extracting the best from his players, and Scholes’ skills would undoubtedly thrive under his management.
Scholes himself has been complimentary of Guardiola in the past, tipping him to become England manager in the future. The former United midfielder has been vocal about his admiration for the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach, praising his innovative approach to the game.
