Paul Scholes slams second Man Utd signing as Erik ten Hag’s transfer strategy picked apart

Paul Scholes Rips Into Manchester United’s Transfer Business

The Manchester United legend has slammed the club’s transfer dealings once again, this time targeting their summer signings. Speaking on his YouTube show, The Overlap, Scholes was brutally honest about the club’s recruitment policy, saying it’s all wrong.

Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles with United, was critical of the club’s approach to signing new players. "Coaches are control freaks, they want to do everything," he said. "If you were Ruud van Nistelrooy watching that, he’s maybe thinking, ‘I’ll take a back seat, I don’t want to get involved in that.’"

He was specifically referencing the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, who has struggled to make an impact since joining the club from Bologna. Scholes believes that United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, should have consulted with former player and assistant coach, Ruud van Nistelrooy, about the signing.

"I’m not sure he would have picked Zirkzee," Scholes said. "Look, there’s probably not a plethora of centre forwards out there, but you would go consult him, wouldn’t you?" Zirkzee has only scored once for United, against Fulham, and has struggled to live up to expectations.

Scholes’ comments are just the latest in a long line of criticism he has aimed at United’s transfer business. Earlier this season, he blasted the signing of Matthijs de Ligt, saying he didn’t think the Dutch international was an upgrade on Harry Maguire.

"When you bring players in, you expect them to be a lot better than who you’ve already got," Scholes said. "I don’t see players coming in who are a big difference. De Ligt has come in for Maguire, let’s say, but there’s no big difference there."

United’s transfer business has been a topic of debate all summer, with fans questioning the club’s decision to spend over £175m on five new players. While De Ligt has shown signs of improving, the other new signings have struggled to make an impact.

So, what can United fans expect from their new-look team? Only time will tell, but it’s clear that Scholes is not impressed with the club’s transfer business.
