Paul Scholes held nothing back as he revealed his ‘concern’ over Matthijs de Ligt in brutal assessment

Scholes Sounds the Alarm on De Ligt Transfer: "He’s Not Good Enough"

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a double swoop for Bayern Munich stars Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, but Paul Scholes isn’t convinced about the former’s quality. The Red Devils legend has slammed De Ligt’s past performances, claiming the defender is "not good enough" for the Premier League giants.

De Ligt’s Lacklustre Form

According to The Athletic, United are on the verge of signing both De Ligt and Mazraoui, but Scholes believes De Ligt’s recent form doesn’t justify a £40-£50 million price tag. "Manchester United are talking about bringing players in who can’t get in their team," Scholes said on The Overlap. "From Bayern Munich, he has not played for them. That has to be a big concern for me, especially when Eric Dier is playing in front of him."

Juventus and Bayern Snub

The 24-year-old has struggled to garner consistent minutes for neither Juventus nor Bayern Munich since leaving Ajax. Juventus got rid of him, and Bayern Munich has struggled to find a spot for him in their starting lineup. "He’s obviously not been good enough at Bayern Munich, so he’s coming to us as like a second-rate defender now," Scholes added.

Ten Hag’s Faith

Erik ten Hag, who has a history with De Ligt from their time at Ajax, remains a big fan of the defender. However, Scholes is unconvinced, citing Ten Hag’s own words from 2019. "I do not know if Matthijs de Ligt has shown 60 to 80 per cent of his potential," Ten Hag said. "But we are talking about one of the best defenders in Europe and I have no doubt that he will soon be number one in this position."

The Verdict

Scholes’ scathing assessment of De Ligt’s abilities may raise eyebrows, but his concerns are valid. With a lacklustre record in two of Europe’s top leagues, it’s difficult to justify a hefty price tag. Will United’s hierarchy heed Scholes’ warning or will they go ahead with the signing? Only time will tell.
